About This Act :

Indrawan Tjhin once started a music career as a hobby back in 1999, learned bass playing from ADA Band bassist Dika, AdiDharmawan and IndroHardjodikoro in LPM Farabi. After he graduated from Bina Nusantara University in 2002, he embarked a serious path into musical experiences and involved with several Top 40 Bands until 2003. Ever since, he started to change the instrument from bass guitar to contra bass which he learned the most from Amir Katamsi. In the same year with pianist Sri hanuraga and guitarist (later became his bandmate in Shadow Puppets Quartet) Robert Mulyarahardja formed Imbroglio and achieved Jazz Goes To Campus winner of Universitas Indonesia in 2003 and he’s been honored as the best bass player. Imbroglio made appearance in Concert Practice PondokPinang which respectively managed by IndraLesmana, also performed in RizaArshad’sPasar Jazz at GedungKesenian Jakarta. Indra’s last performance with Imbroglio was back in 2005 before he went to study music in the Netherlands. He studied Jazz contrabass for 4 years in Koninklijk Conservatorium (Royal Conservatory) of The Hague, directly taught by UliGlaszmann, Frans van DerHoeven, Hein Van DeGeyn and classical contrabass by Roelof Meijer, also several workshops and master classes with Larry Grenadier, Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Dave Liebman, Brandford Marsalis, John Abrecombie and Peter Erskine. He also played with several local groups there and had performed in several jazz events in Europe (Netherlands, Italy and Belgium), and regularly played in local jazz club. In 2008, he went home to Indonesia and performed with RizaArshad, Sri Hanuraga and Sandy Winarta, which later known as W/H/A/T Quartet which result in releasing an album entitled “No Words”. In early June 2009, after he graduated his study, he went home and enchanced his music career especially in Indonesia’s Jazz scene.

As a session player and sideman Indrawan had been involved as a bassist of AminotoKosin Big Band dan Orchestra, MeryKasiman Big Band, Bubi Chen Sextet, RizaArshad trio,NialDjuliarso Trio, Sandy Winarta Quartet, DonyKoeswinarno Quartet, Bandanaira, Notturno trio, AndiWiriantono Trio and Maya Hasan Quartet, peforming in stages such as Java Jazz Festival, Jazz Goes To Campus, Serambi Jazz, GedungKesenian Jakarta &Salihara Theater.

Indrawan Tjhin was active as the bassist of Shadow Puppets Quartet (www.shadowpuppetsquartet.com), resigned from the Quartet in December 2011 and concentrating in his own ensemble Indrawan Tjhin Group. In November 2010 he received the Jazz Rising Star award from the Jazz Goes To Campus of Universitas Indonesia.

In education fields he is a bass instructor at the PelitaHarapan Conservatory (UniversitasPelitaHarapan, www.uph.edu) and head of Theory Department and ensemble instructor at the AminotoKosin Music School, besides teaching private bass coaching at home.
