Tjut Nyak Deviana Daudsjah has lived and worked in Europe for almost 26 years, where after completing her studies with a doctorate degree, she taught music while carving a career as composer, arranger, music director and all-round performer. Born in Jakarta Indonesia, Deviana began her long journey in music at the age of five when she first took formal lessons in Bangkok, Thailand. At 18, she left Indonesia for Freiburg, Germany, to study classical piano & composition at the Musikhochschule Freiburg. As a pedagogue, Deviana became Academic Director of the Jazz & Rockschule Freiburg Germany, where the curriculum she designed was validated by the federal government. She was also professor for ensemble, piano, vocal, improvisation, choir and ear training at the Music Academy Basel – Jazz Department, Switzerland, where she designed the curriculum for modern vocal study and vocal improvisation, validated by Swiss Association of Music Educators (SMPV). Her musical works for the past 34 years in Thailand, Europe & USA include; various International jazz festivals such as Grand Lancy Jazz Festival in Geneva, Altreu International Jazz Festival Swiss, Stuttgart Jazz Open Germany, Lugano Jazz Festival Swiss, classical piano concerts, musical director, composer, vocal coach and performer at the National Theatre Basel Swiss where she received recognition as outstanding artist. She was 5 times first winner of SoulJazz Band competition in Germany 1978, 2 times first winner of Swiss National and National Swiss TV of Eurovision Sing contest in Switzerland 1982 and 1983 where afterward she received offers for her first record album production from BMG Ariola Swiss and Polygram Germany. She rejected the offers because she wanted to pursue her career independently to concentrate in Music education. She received an award for the best Jazz pianist in 1997 in Zuerich-Oerlikon Swiss. Back in Jakarta since early 2000, she established together with Mr. Nick Mamahit, the legendary Indonesian pianist, Yayasan Daya Bina Budaya and Institut Musik Daya Indonesia, the first independent Music Academy with international standardized Curriculum in Indonesia. Yayasan Daya Bina Budaya social-cultural activities include the annual Indonesia Open Jazz Festival initiated by her. Deviana is back home for good to contribute formal music education to her country. In 2005 Deviana received a prestigious “Citra Kartini” award from the Indonesian Minister of Women Empowerment for her outstanding contribution in Indonesian Music Education. In 2007 Deviana became a member of Music Consortium Department of Education of Republic of Indonesia. The task of Music Consortium is to standardize the National Arts Curriculum and founding the National Association of Arts Pedagogue & Practitioners to maintain the quality of Arts Education in Indonesia. Since the founding of Institut Musik Daya Indonesia in 2001, Deviana together with her colleagues have successfully graduated her first 8 students with Bachelor and Master Degree in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Among them are the composers/arrangers/conductors of the film Music of “Laskar Pelangi”, “Photograph” and “Garuda Didadaku”. And currently Deviana is still working as professor for arranging & orchestration, composition and conducting, symphony analysis, counterpoint, tonsatz, piano, vocal, basic theater science, Music sociology and Musician mental ideology at Institut Musik Daya Indonesia.
